A word from the farmer this week
This is a blog by a farm owner, sharing his thoughts and feelings about what happened this week at Organic Network. Please feel free to read it if you have some free time.

This chart looks rather complicated... (laughs) But it's part of the data from an analysis of the soil in our field. I've written many times before that the Yamanashi Prefectural Agricultural Technology Center has been conducting a demonstration project over four years since 2024 to verify the usefulness of the low-tillage cultivation method we use, and as part of that, Professor Kataoka of Yamanashi University has been investigating the microorganisms in the soil as part of a joint investigation. After two years of research and analysis, they've learned a few things, so I went to see them the other day to hear what they had to say. I can't write about the details because there hasn't been an official announcement yet (and to be honest, my knowledge level isn't high enough to fully understand it and write about it in detail anyway...), but in short, they found that there are more microorganisms (especially mycorrhizal fungi and rhizobia) and a richer microbial layer compared to general organic farming. Why is that? Also, there are many unknowns about what roles the various microorganisms play and what kind of correlations they have, so they hope to clarify as much as possible in the remaining period of research and analysis. During our conversation, Professor Kataoka mentioned that reduced-tillage farming is extremely rare globally, and that the fact that we're doing intercropping (planting different crops between existing crops, allowing multiple crops to grow simultaneously in the same field) is particularly significant. One thing that bothers me is that he said it's "extremely rare globally," which sounds like a big deal, but doesn't that just mean he's an eccentric? (laughs) However, if it proves successful, it will be amazing, so I guess it's okay. I'm really looking forward to seeing what we learn next!
